Thousands people marched in central London this Saturday against the austerity measures introduced by the right-wing coalition government in the UK. The protesters gathered at the houses of parliament chanting anti-austerity slogans. Speakers at the gathering included the celebrity comedian Russell Brand.
Several key worker unions, including the National Union of Teachers, as well as activists from Stop The War Coalition and the CND were also involved in the protest. Speeches were given at the Parliament Square from the People’s Assembly, Caroline Lucas (MP), and Owen Jones (journalist).
Since the world economic crisis in 2008 the Western governments, including the UK, have been on a continuous agenda of cutting back from social services with privatization. With their theory of “trickle down economics” they have given large tax breaks to the richest corporations with bogus proclamations about “creating jobs” and “rejuvenating the economy”. In addition billions of pounds bailouts were handed to the central banks and corporations who were central and key players in creating the crisis. These bailouts are being paid by the working people of the UK through their taxes for years to come.
Austerity cuts to social services such as the NHS are the symptoms of a profit driven malignant system. It is no longer new knowledge that the MPs in parliament do not represent the working people and only serve the rich and powerful 1%. All the political parties in the UK from the far right coalition all the way to the so called “left” have become saturated with their lies. Their shroud has long fallen and now they can no longer make empty promises and give false hopes of a better future to the working people.
The people on the streets have a voice and they have a destination. They are the 99%. The MPs in parliament have their hands tied to the political machinery of capitalism and have no choice but to continue with their lies and deceit. In this way, these protests will never simmer and disappear so long as the corporations continue to strangle the economy with their endless greed and profiteering.
The next rally is set for mid October.
