In May of this year the Islamic
regime in Iran arrested the director of the Iranian version of William
Pharrell’s “Happy” music video along with all the participating dancers. The
video features a group of six young Iranian men and women, including one
Iranian woman without hijab, dancing to the world famous William Pharrell’s
popular dance hit. The news of their arrest brought in support from far and
wide, including William Pharrell himself, and the group’s video became a large
YouTube hit.
After being arrested, the group of
six were imprisoned where they were interrogated and put in solitary
confinement. In addition, the Islamic regime forced these young men and women
to apologize on national television as way to both humiliate them as well as an
attempt to spread fear into the hearts of all other young people in Iran that
may have been inspired by the video.
After three months since their
arrest, the three men and three women are now on trial. Accused by the Islamic
regime of making an “obscene video clip that offended the public morals”, they
are now facing very serious series of charges including having sex outside
marriage, posting on YouTube, failing to observe the Islamic dress code,
dancing, and contacting foreign television networks (this may develop into a
“spying” charge in the future).
These six young men and women are
being prosecuted for the “crime” of self-expression, being creative, enjoying
music, dancing, having sex and enjoying their youth! These six young men and
women are an example of the countless other youth that are trapped in the
Islamic regime of Iran. For over 30 years, the Islamic regime in Iran has made
countless attempts to strangle youthful vitality, energy and life, and is now
using these six young people to continue this assault. However, as this video
suggests, and is abundantly clear in Iran, Iranian youth will boldly continue
the struggle for their human right to enjoy their youth!
This dance video made by these six
youth not only highlights and exemplifies the revolutionary spirit of the
Iranians and their resilience and courage in the face of the Islamic regime in
Iran, but also it is a calling for support from the world! The Iranian youth
need the world to echo their cry for change! The youth in Iran are being denied
their very basic human rights and freedoms by a tyrannical regime that uses
humiliation, torture and execution to exist. We must all continue our pressure
and demand that the Iranian regime stop its prosecution of youth and to release
these six young men and women immediately!
